The Pixel 4a arrived in India a few months late, but that did not stop it from becoming an immediate success — something you can not often say about Google Phones — surprisingly. But that was two years ago and the South Asian country has not seen a Google phone since. After a two-year hiatus, the wait is over: the economical Pixel 6a will arrive in India in the coming months. There could not have been a better time for the Pixel budget phone to return to the Indian market, but its success depends on one key factor.
However, the Pixel 6a will not be coming to India any time soon. ONE tweet by Google India after Google I / O keynote speech vaguely mentions “later this year” as the release schedule. The situation is not much different in dozens of other markets, including the US, where the handset was released in July. But this is still an improvement over the Pixel 5a, which was never made available outside of Japan and the US due to supply chain constraints during the pandemic.
Delay can be really good (for Google)
In 2020, the Pixel 4a debut in India was also a few months behind the US. Google timed it to match the big sales of the weeks before Diwali, but the company struggled to keep up with high demand. Retailers typically make a large portion of their annual phone sales during the Diwali season and could give Google the much needed start in the Indian market.
Assuming Google has similar plans this time around, the Pixel 6a could be released in early October. But that’s nothing more than a presumption, and given how volatile supply chains have been lately, it would take a lot of things to get it right so the Pixel phone can do it on time. It’s interesting that a tipster recently uploaded to Twitter that traffic in India could coincide with the US, i.e.. until the end of July.
But this delay of many months also brings some disadvantages. Enthusiasm among prospective buyers is sure to wane over time. And given how fast the local smartphone industry is, there will be plenty of options to choose from in a few months. One can not deny the ability of Chinese smartphone makers to be ready to adapt quickly and respond to any change in the market, which is the Pixel 6a this time.
The advantage of Pixel
No matter how quickly competitors respond to Google’s mid-range offering, there are some things a Pixel would do better every day. Mid-range phones take good pictures in daylight, but tend to have difficulty in low light. But Pixels, even the a series, shine in all scenarios. And the 6a even gets all the AI-enabled camera tricks of its more expensive siblings, which place the phone uniquely on its own.
Pixel’s clean software experience also stands out compared to its competitors’ highly loaded skins. Motorola is the only other brand to offer a similar messy operating system, but its commitment to updates lags behind Google’s updates. The benchmark set by Pixel phones could potentially push even other brands such as OnePlus and Xiaomi to step up their game to offer better and more consistent software support.
If any Pixel has a chance of becoming big in India, this is the Pixel 6a.
But this is not even the best part. With Google’s custom Tensor chip on the budget, the new Pixel 6a is on par with the Pixel 6 Pro and other flagships in terms of performance. This contrasts with the iPhone SE – minus the old design.
It will take a lot to beat brands like Xiaomi and Realme that have a strong foothold in the Indian market. However, considering everything that Google’s new budget phone brings to the table, if any Pixel has a chance to make it big in India, this is the Pixel 6a.
When price matters – a lot
Those who follow the Indian smartphone market know that the price sections here work a little differently here. A phone that costs over .000 40,000 (~ $ 520) is considered premium and the price of the Pixel 6a with taxes is quite close to this limit. Therefore, it is important for Google to stay below this amount to make the Pixel 6a worth the effort for buyers.
Fortunately for Google, the price of -40 30-40,000 is booming in the country, although most sales are made in the lower divisions. Increased consumer interest has led all major companies to offer dozens of good options. However, most of these phones do not have the superior overall experience that shoppers want in this segment – an experience offered by the Google Pixel 6a.
Not everything is rosy for Google, however, as Apple looks forward to the same price range. Armed with locally produced steaks (resulting in lower taxes), the iPhone 12 and 11 series with big discounts were among the best sellers during Diwali’s rush last year. While it may still be relatively easy for Google to divert buyers from other Android phone brands, competing with Apple can prove difficult, especially when iPhones have ambitious value.
The success of the Pixel 6a will depend solely on one factor – price.
India has never been a priority market for Google hardware. No Pixel flagships have been released in the country since the Pixel 3, the new Chromecast has not yet arrived here, and Amazon Echo speakers typically outperform Google’s Home speakers.
Despite all these possibilities and the limited local availability in all categories, Google still managed to create a buzz around the Pixel 6 in India – a phone that was not officially offered in the country. Some hard-core Pixel fans here have bought imported units from local dealers without any warranty coverage just to have a phone that is not made by one of the major brands. Even Amazon.in has the phone registered through a third party seller and the price is not much lower than its MSRP in the US.
Sales figures for these imported units are obviously not high, but the fact that this is the case is an indication that Indians have an appetite for Pixel phones. Last year ‘s Pixel 6 series created a positive perception among buyers in India, and the response has run out even outside the small group of enthusiasts. Whether or not Google is able to cash in will depend solely on one factor – the price. If Google manages to do it right, the Pixel 6a could be a huge success, but if not, it’s Google who will lose, not buyers.
