2022 was a year of bumper for display technology, with a whole host of exciting new image enhancement technologies to come. The latest line of display technology is Samsung’s latest QD-OLED – a hybrid technology that combines the key features and benefits of both QD (Quantum Dot) and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) in an effort to remove LG at the top of the OLED ladder.

While you may not have heard much about QD-OLED yet, many speculate that it could be the new standard for OLED TV technology. Not only does it fix one of the key issues facing OLED TVs, it also has a price that is incredibly competitive.

Admittedly, there are not many QD-OLED TVs to choose from, however, with the new mass-produced 49-inch and 77-inch QD-OLEDs starting next year, we will definitely see the list of options grow.

Why Consider a QD-OLED TV?

QD-OLED is a brand new technology and, for the most part, many of the advantages and disadvantages it offers are not known to the general consumer.

Fortunately, we are up to date with all the latest announcements about the latest display technology, allowing us to point out the main reasons why you may want to consider such technology this summer.

Color accuracy

Traditional OLED panels use a color filter consisting of red, blue and green subpixels. This layer is what creates the color on your OLED TV. Although it works perfectly, it does not produce the wide range of Quantum Dot colors – a technology that uses a color filter, LCD matrix and a Quantum Dots mattress to produce color.

Of course, QD-OLED technology will make use of this level, which means that the color accuracy should be much higher with QD-OLED TVs compared to alternative OLEDs. Even better, due to the wide color gamut that QD-OLED TVs have to offer, we can expect a much more realistic and immersive HDR experience.

Maximum brightness

One of the biggest problems with OLED TVs was their inability to produce high brightness. We compared OLED with the standard LED a while ago and the difference in maximum brightness was clear to everyone.

That said, one of the great advantages of QD-OLED is its ability to produce higher maximum brightness. Although this has not yet been 100% confirmed, it is very likely that QD-OLED TVs will be brighter than traditional OLED panels – resulting in better daytime viewing and HDR performance.

Burns & life expectancy

Burn-in or picture preservation is an ever-increasing problem faced by modern OLED TVs. If a TV continues to display the same image for several hours, it can burn the image to the OLED layer for the immediate future. Of course, this ruins your visual experience, as these pixels can no longer display other colors.

That said, the latest OLED TVs are becoming increasingly advanced in this area, with manufacturers developing anti-burn-in technology that exponentially reduces the risk. The same thinking process seems to apply to every QD-OLED panel, with Samsung using a stack of three-layer OLEDs to help distribute the brightness and reduce the burning potential.

This will not only reduce the risk of burns, but will also dramatically increase the life expectancy of QD-OLED TVs.

Sizes

One issue with the latest QD-OLED TVs is the size availability. At present, Samsung only produces 55-inch and 65-inch variants of its new hybrid display technology. The reason for this is still unknown, however, after the failure of the brand S9C OLED TV, they can slowly start to see how sales will develop.

That said, all indications are that QD-OLED TVs will support a range of sizes – especially now that the brand looks set to begin mass production of 49-inch and 77-inch variants early next year.
