Imagine, if you will, a rock crash on the surface of the moon. The crash site is weird, unlike the others. The rocket itself comes from an unknown location. It’s not Whistle Zone, It is true. This past month NASA revealed that a kind of rocket had landed on the moon, with a strange impact crater.
On June 24, NASA released images of the lunar landing site, taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in May. According to the space agency, everything that reached the surface of the moon took place on March 4 after being discovered on the way to the moon in late 2021. The moon is covered in craters that have more impact than the old rocket components, but this is new. Is special because it is two separate, reciprocal points of impact. Everything that damaged the moon was done in such a way that it formed a crater over a distance of 18 meters. As NASA noted, this means that each end of the rocket had a large mass, unusual for such effects.
But no one knows where the rocket came from. NASA can say that the rocket was in space at least late last year, in the wake of a severe crash with the moon. But who sent it and why? It’s a mystery. And outside of NASA, the U.S. space command, the space force, even the wider Department of Defense, are all silent. Opinions exist but nothing is confirmed.
“As the origin of the rocket’s body remains unclear, the dual nature of the crater may determine its identity,” NASA said in a statement.
And no, it’s not likely to be aliens. It’s not Independence day.
Why doesn’t NASA know? This is NASA, and the moon is relatively close. The United States and its allies have satellites, binoculars and coffee tracking software to monitor what is happening in space and from where. Rocket launches are detectable – every time North Korea tests a ballistic missile the intelligence and military world is too quick to identify the route, range and potential launch point. This particular event looks like work for the space force. The service unit has guards who monitor satellites and rockets in low orbit and follow their path. The moon is a bit far away, but the space force wants to expand its patrols. But so far, the space force has not said anything.
So why is the origin of this rocket obscure? Different branches of the military and the government have historically been rivals or at odds with each other, but rocket launches pass through different regions and seem to pave the way for information sharing. Dozens of rock fragments, from booster to other parts, hit the surface of the moon. In 2009 NASA even bombarded the moon as part of an experiment in search of potential water on the moon. But this case seems more accidental than experience.
However, there are possible theories. The March 4 accident was reported at the time. The leading theory of scientists is that it was the third phase rooster booster from the Chinese CHANG’E 5-T1 rocket that was launched in 2014. The 18th Space Control Squadron that manages the space satellite tracking had initially reported a rocket booster burning. Raised, but then changed its position which is still in orbit. In March, Squadron gave a statement to De Verez, saying the piece of rock had not been fired from orbit, but it was not clear what it was that was the surface of the moon.
So is Chinese Rocket the source of this strange double crater? Space observers have not yet confirmed or denied the allegations. Neither the 18th Space Control Squadron nor the Wide Space Force commented on NASA photos and publications as of press time. But if it was the CHANG’E 5-T1, it’s also not clear how it created the double crater.
